Alabama John Cherokee

“Alabama John Cherokee” is a dark traditional hauling shanty with roots in Black maritime work-song traditions. Early collectors connected it with African American and West Indian sailors and laborers, and Captain John Robinson recalled hearing it in Nassau during the Civil War while a crew loaded cotton. Its strong call-and-response rhythm gave sailors two well-timed pulls on the recurring refrain.

The story itself is much less cheerful. John Cherokee is an enslaved man who repeatedly tries to escape, is captured and chained aboard ship, and in several collected versions dies after brutal confinement—only to return as a ghost high in the rigging. Our design draws on that haunting side of the old shanty: broken chains, a skeletal sailor, the first light of morning and the rooster whose crow marks the end of his watch. A striking remembrance of one of the shanty tradition’s darker stories—and of the Black working-song traditions that helped shape music at sea.
