Bound for South Australia

Inspired by the great capstan shanty “South Australia,” this design looks back to the long sailing trade between Britain and the Australian colonies. The song was closely associated with ships carrying wool—and later wheat—between Australian ports and London, with its rolling chorus well suited to the steady work of the capstan.

Our artwork imagines the voyage itself: a fully rigged merchant ship standing out from port, Cape Horn still ahead and South Australia waiting on the far side of the world. The familiar cry of “Heave away, haul away” runs through the design, while the lower lettering nods to the passengers and valuable cargoes that helped tie Britain and Australia together in the age of sail. A shirt for anyone who hears that chorus and is immediately ready to sing the next line.
