Donkey Riding

“Donkey Riding” is a traditional work song closely tied to the timber trade of Canada and the North Atlantic. Its verses roam from Quebec and Miramichi to London, Mobile and Cape Horn, recalling the ports and hard cargo work familiar to sailors and dockworkers. It was sung while loading timber and other cargo, as well as for shipboard work requiring a strong, steady rhythm.

And despite our artwork, the “donkey” probably wasn’t meant to be the four-legged variety. The phrase has often been connected with donkey engines and other cargo-working machinery, although the song’s long history makes the exact origin of the expression less certain than is sometimes claimed. Our design happily ignores that ambiguity and takes the chorus literally: one sailor, one donkey, and a deck piled high with timber. Sometimes the wrong interpretation makes the better shirt.
