Gals of Chile

“The Gals of Chile” comes out of the sailing-ship trade along the west coast of South America, a world of long passages, hard ships, and memorable nights ashore. The song belongs to the family of maritime songs associated with the Chilean, guano, and saltpetre trades, and surviving versions suggest that sailors often sang it rather more bawdily than later printed versions allowed.

Our design embraces the shore-going swagger of the song: sailing ships offshore, a bottle of Pisco de Chile, and the celebrated gals themselves front and center. The old sailor language is preserved in the banners, while the artwork imagines the colorful waterfront world awaiting a crew newly arrived on the Chilean coast. A little pisco, a little trouble, and another good reason sailors remembered the west coast long after they sailed away.
