Old Molasses Rum

On January 15, 1919, Boston’s North End was struck by one of the strangest industrial disasters in American history. A massive storage tank holding more than two million gallons of molasses failed, sending a dark wave through the surrounding streets, damaging buildings, overturning vehicles, and killing 21 people.

Our Purity Old Molasses design turns that infamous moment into a piece of fictional vintage advertising. The bottle, the old Boston streetscape, and the rolling molasses flood all play on the name of the company connected to the disaster, giving the design the look of a century-old brand poster from a history that went very wrong. A little Boston history, a little dark humor, and one unforgettable reminder that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.
