The Grey Funnel Line

Commercial steamship companies were once instantly recognizable by their funnels, painted in distinctive colors and patterns to advertise the line they belonged to. Royal Navy ships were rather less colorful. Their plain grey funnels helped inspire an old sailor’s nickname for the service: “The Grey Funnel Line.”

Our design takes that bit of naval slang at face value, imagining the Royal Navy as just another grand shipping company—only one with armored hulls, heavy guns, and considerably stricter expectations of its passengers. A tribute to British naval tradition, sailor humor, and the unmistakable silhouette of a grey warship at sea.
