The Lime Juice Ship

By the 19th century, citrus had become one of the British sailor’s most important defenses against scurvy—and such a familiar part of life at sea that British sailors and ships acquired the nickname “lime-juicers.” The Royal Navy had begun issuing citrus decades earlier, while British merchant-shipping laws eventually required lime or lemon juice to be carried and served on long voyages.

Our Lime Juice Ship turns that wonderfully practical bit of maritime history into an imaginary citrus carrier, running before the wind with a hold full of limes. The Merchant Shipping Act of 1867 tightened the rules governing the lime and lemon juice carried aboard British merchant vessels, even specifying how it was to be inspected and prepared. So while the cure for scurvy was serious business, the result was one of sailing history’s more colorful legacies: British sailors, British ships, and a whole lot of lime juice.
