Ranzo’s Whaling Co.

Inspired by the old sea shanty “Reuben Ranzo,” this design imagines the song’s unlikely sailor having done rather well for himself. In many traditional versions, Ranzo begins as no sailor at all—often described as a tailor—before finding himself aboard a whaling ship and learning the business the hard way. Like so many shanties, the details shift from singer to singer, but poor old Ranzo somehow keeps coming back.

Ranzo’s Whaling Co. takes the story one step further, turning the hapless hand into the proprietor of his own whaling concern. Rope, rolling seas, a distant ship and a sounding whale give the design the feel of a long-established maritime company mark, while “Fair Seas • Fine Oil” supplies the sort of confident motto Ranzo probably never imagined when he first went to sea. A little sea-shanty history, a little alternate history—and a fitting tribute to one of the tradition’s most memorable characters.
