Johnny Come Down to Hilo

nspired by the lively capstan and windlass shanty “Johnny Come Down to Hilo,” this design brings one of its most memorable refrains to life: “Oh, wake her, oh, shake her / Oh, wake that girl with the blue dress on.” The song circulated in several forms, with verses borrowed and reshaped from older African American and minstrel-song traditions, while the blue-dressed girl became one of the chorus’s enduring images.

Our artwork imagines her right in the middle of the music—blue dress flying, sailors playing, and the whole waterfront caught up in the chorus. Like many great shanties, “Johnny Come Down to Hilo” is less a tidy story than a collection of memorable lines, floating verses, and a refrain built to be sung by a crew. This one celebrates the part nobody forgets: wake her, shake her, and bring Johnny down to Hilo.
