Who's Timmy?

Spend enough time around a sea-shanty session and sooner or later you may find yourself wondering the same thing: who exactly is Timmy?

Traditional shanties are full of rhythmic cries and refrains written variously as “timme,” “to me,” “way hey,” and other wonderfully flexible bits of sailor language. Sung by a roomful of people at full volume, some of those refrains can sound suspiciously like everyone is calling for a fellow named Timmy. He never seems to answer, but apparently the singing cannot continue without him.

Our Who’s Timmy? shirt is for everyone who has heard the chorus, joined in anyway, and eventually had to ask the obvious question. No explanation on the shirt. If you know, you know—and if you don’t, somebody at the next shanty sing will probably explain it to you.
